Born in the village of Stamford, New York in 1946. Raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Emancipated in Tennessee after military service where he obtained his Master's Degree and Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Tennessee
Upon graduating, Mr. Steffan served as Law Clerk for the Honorable Samuel Lewis of the Tennessee Court of Appeals, and thereafter for the Honorable Harry Phillips, United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. At the close of his clerkships in 1980, Mr. Steffan moved his family to Northern Virginia where he commenced the practice of law until he was appointed Trial Attorney with the United States Department of Justice, Tax Division He served over six years as the Justice Department's lead tax litigation counsel in the federal district courts primarily for the States of Colorado and Wyoming. The United States Attorney General twice honored Mr. Steffan the coveted award of "U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division, Outstanding Trial Attorney."
In 1990, Mr. Steffan returned to the private practice of law in Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia with a primary emphasis on estate planning. In 1996, his firm, Steffan & Associates, P.C. co-founded Steffan & Macdonald, L.L.C. At the close of 2005, Steffan & Macdonald, L.L.C. was dissolved and Mr. Steffan then continued the estate planning practice under the banner of Steffan & Associates, P.C., servicing clients in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to this date.
Mr. Steffan is a Licensed Instructor for Continuing Education on topics of Insurance Laws & Regulations, Retirement & Savings Plans, and Financial & Estate Planning. Mr. Steffan also maintains a continuing public speaking agenda on a variety of estate planning topics.
Mr. Steffan is a Co-Author of the Book entitled Total Wealth Management: "The Definitive Guide to Estate and Financial Planning", is the subject of news articles and participates in public forums educating the public, particularly uniformed services, on estate planning issues and strategies.
